These pyrometric cones are designed to help potters monitor heatwork during firing. As the kiln heats, the cone gradually bends at its calibrated firing point, providing a visual indication of whether the pottery has received the intended firing.

Ideal for earthenware and low-fire pottery

This starter set includes three firing ranges:

• 960°C — useful for lower-temperature earthenware firing
• 1000°C — a key reference point for common earthenware firing
• 1040°C — useful for checking higher-temperature earthenware firing

They are particularly useful with locally built wood- and charcoal-fired kilns, where kiln temperature can vary considerably between firings and between different areas of the kiln.

Why use pyrometric cones?

A kiln may reach a high peak temperature without the pottery receiving enough heatwork at that temperature. Pyrometric cones take both temperature and time into account, giving you a practical way to assess the firing your pottery actually experienced.

• Check whether your kiln is reaching your intended firing range
• Compare different firings
• Identify variations in kiln performance
• Improve consistency from one batch to another
• Help determine suitable firing conditions for your clay and glaze
